October 7 - Psalm 133:1

How wonderful it is, how pleasant,
when brothers live together in harmony!
Psalm 133:1

Here's what I want you to do this morning ... Go to the cupboard, get out a jug of vegetable oil, pour it all over your head, and let it run down over your face and onto your clothes.

Sound good?

Actually, a head full of oil is precisely how good this Psalm says people living together in unity is: "How wonderful it is ... when brothers live together in harmony! For harmony is as precious as the fragrant anointing oil that was poured over Aaron's head, that ran down his beard and onto the border of his robe."

Sound good? Well, let's make it a little more pleasant ... It wasn't vegetable oil that scripture was talking about. It was a fragrant anointing oil. A little mark of oil on the forehead would have meant that the sweet smell of prayer would have followed you throughout the day. Oil running down your face and saturating your robes would have been like being completely bathed in prayer.

That's how good and important church unity is to God.

In Christ's Love,
a guy who needs a bath
